Is artificial turf safe for kids?
Answered by Evan Benjamin: straight answers from 31+ years of combined industry experience.
Yes, with the right product and the paperwork to prove it. Quality turf is tested to ASTM safety standards and is lead-free (below the limits set by ASTM F2765; the Consumer Product Safety Commission regulates lead content in products used by children under 12). Our lines are PFAS-free as well.
For dedicated play areas, there’s a further bar: playground-rated turf systems (turf plus a shock pad underneath) are tested to ASTM F1292 impact attenuation standards for fall heights typically in the 6–12 foot range. If a play structure is involved, the system under it should carry a fall-height rating that meets or exceeds the equipment’s. We wrote a full guide to the playground standards worth bookmarking if that’s your project.
