Does Artificial Grass Get Hot? The Full Story, No Dodging

Artificial lawn in full afternoon sun

The honest physics

Living grass runs cool because it’s a swamp cooler: roots pump water that leaves through the blades. Artificial grass has no water to spend, so in direct summer sun it runs hotter than living grass, in the same family as decking and pavers. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling; the real questions are how much, when it matters, and what helps.

What actually helps

  • Blade geometry: the W, C, and S cross-sections on spec sheets keep blades upright and reflecting light instead of lying flat and soaking it in. A real factor, though color and shade move the needle more.
  • Color and infill choices: lighter multi-tone blends and lighter infills run cooler than dark monochromes.
  • Water, briefly: a 30-second hose mist drops the surface dramatically and buys an hour-plus of comfortable play. Still a rounding error versus irrigating living grass.
  • Shade and timing: sails, trees, and the 16 non-peak hours of the day, same as every patio in the Sun Belt.

When it matters, and when it doesn’t

Peak-afternoon summer sun in hot climates: plan barefoot play for mornings, evenings, shade, or after a mist, the same accommodations every outdoor surface asks. The other ten months, and every morning and evening, the question evaporates. Millions of Phoenix, Vegas, and Palm Springs yards have made the trade knowingly: a few peak hours of caution against zero irrigation in a desert. They keep making it.
