Can artificial turf go over concrete?
Answered by Evan Benjamin: straight answers from 31+ years of combined industry experience.
Yes. Patios, pool decks, balconies, and rooftops are all standard turf projects, and no excavation is needed. The one non-negotiable: a cushioning underlayment between the concrete and the turf, typically a closed-cell foam pad around 3/8" to 1/2" thick. It provides the give underfoot, creates drainage channels, and blocks heat transfer from the slab. Skip it and the surface feels like carpet over sidewalk, because that’s what it is.
Rooftops and balconies add two checks: weight (a saturated turf system runs roughly 3–5 lbs per square foot, so verify the structure can carry it) and drainage (never block existing roof drains or scuppers; water must keep exiting at its designed points). Tell us it’s a rooftop when you quote and we’ll spec the system accordingly.
