Can I install artificial grass myself?
Answered by Evan Benjamin: straight answers from 31+ years of combined industry experience.
For a small, simple, flat area (a side yard, a dog run, a patio surround), yes, a capable DIYer can do this. For a full lawn with slopes, curves, and multiple seams, most people underestimate what they’re signing up for.
The part everyone underestimates is under the turf: the base. Three to four inches of crushed aggregate, properly graded and compacted, is roughly 60% of what makes an installation good. Improper base work means wrinkles, drainage problems, and a shortened lifespan. Most self-install failures trace to insufficient compaction or poor seams, not the turf itself. Read our DIY guide honestly before renting anything; we sell to DIYers happily and will talk you through base prep for your specific ground.
