Will artificial turf flood my yard when it rains?
Answered by Evan Benjamin: straight answers from 31+ years of combined industry experience.
No, and the margin is bigger than most people expect. Quality perforated backing drains at 30 inches per hour or more. For scale, a severe thunderstorm produces about 2 inches per hour. The turf layer is never the bottleneck.
The full stack matters though: water passes through the backing, into the crushed-aggregate base (its own drainage layer), and into the soil below, with the surface graded at a slight slope like any good landscape. When a turf yard puddles, the story is almost always a base built wrong, which is why we harp on base prep in every guide we publish. Pet systems push drainage further still, with fully permeable FlowThru backings rated at over 1,000 inches per hour.
